The first Snowboarding discipline at the Kořenov-Rejdice venue ended with a great, rather unexpected Swiss-Italian triumph. This afternoon the gold medals in Snowboardcross went to Swiss, Caroline Weibel and Italian, Matteo Menconi. The Czechs were delighted with Ester Ledecká, the daughter of the pop singer, Janek Ladecký, who won the small finals, finishing fifth in the end.

EYOWF 2011 has its Ski Jumping winner on the K-90 ski jumping hill. It is the Finnish jumper Jarkko Maatta, 16, who jumped in both rounds more than a hundred metres. Another hero of the evening on Ještěd was the Norwegian youth, Mats Sohagen Berggaard, who broke the record of the Liberec ski jumping hill when landing as far as the 114 m mark in an official practice round.

The British downhill skier, Nicholas Moynihan had a very special fan at the giant slalom track: his father, Colin, the President of the British Olympic Association. This almost seventeen-year old young man finished 31st.

Wind Problems

Forty four athletes from 13 countries started their competition in Nordic Combined. From the beginning the Austrians were the favourites on paper. They met these expectations when Markus Gruber landed on the 101.5 m mark and left the whole line-up behind.

The boys’ Giant Slalom on the Pod Lany run was dominated by the Norwegian athlete Henrik Kristoffersen, who had to fight off fierce competition as a record number of 101 Alpine skiers from 44 countries of Europe took part in the race in ideal sunny conditions.

The white track race continued its second day on the Vesec slope, the only difference being that after the longest race of Cross Country Ski week, it was now time for the shortest track. On the 1.15 kilometre long course, the titles of king and queen of the sprint were at stake.
