What will the medals at the EYOWF 2011 look like?

The Organisers of the European Youth Olympic Winter Festival (EYOWF) 2011 in the Liberec Region are facing another challenging task in the long course of preparations. This involves choosing a medal design for the more than 200 medals the best athletes from throughout Europe will take home with them. On Thursday, 8th July, the first round of selection took place and only seven out of more than 60 medal designs were placed on the short-list.
On behalf of the Liberec Region, the organiser of the 2011 Festival, art schools of the Region were asked to suggest medal designs. Kateřina Nyčová, Executive Director of the EYOWF 2011 Organising Committee, comments: "I have to say that we saw some really interesting designs, ranging from traditional-style medals to truly original, ingenious pieces. The debate over the short-list made up of more than 60 designs took us almost two hours."
All the submitted designs were assessed from the aesthetic point of view as well as in terms of originality. The difficulty of realisation and the financial aspect of production also played an important role. The short-listed seven designs were chosen by Karolína Kopřivová, glass artist from the Higher and Secondary school in Nový Bor, Pavel Brožek, academic sculptor at the Secondary School of Applied Arts and the College of Crafts in Turnov, Josef Oplištil, academic sculptor at the Higher school in Jablonec nad Nisou and members of the EYOWF 2011 Organising Committee: Kateřina Nyčová, Executive Director, Helena Bízová, Marketing Manager, Daniel Merz, Promotion Manager, and representatives of the Education, Physical Education and Sport Department of the Liberec Region Eva Hodboďová and Tomáš Pokorný.
Kateřina Nyčová added: "The short-listed schools will now carry out the production costing of their designs and will finalise the medals so as to allow us to choose the winning design in the middle of September and launch the production of the 90 sets of medals for EYOWF 2011. The author of the winning design will be, of course, rewarded."
